Chesebro was the third of 19 codefendants in the Georgia case to make a deal, a monumental legal and personal blow to Trump, who highly prizes loyalty among his associates. Another former Trump lawyer, Sidney Powell, entered into a plea deal Thursday, following a September deal by a lesser-known bail bondsman, Scott Hall. While other defendants – especially Trump – have pushed for later trial dates, Chesebro insisted on his right to a speedy trial. Jury selection for his case started Friday, and Chesebro entered into the plea deal hours after potential jurors filed into the courthouse. The Chesebro deal could be the third domino to fall against Trump and other high-level defendants such as former Trump lawyer and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

A Financial Crisis in China Is No Longer Unthinkable

Country Garden, once seen as one of China’s most stable property developers, is now struggling financially, leaving the future of unfinished megadevelopments like Malaysia’s Forest City in doubt. Here’s how overbuilding, and a streak of bad luck, have left China’s real-estate developers in the red. Photo: Adam AdadaThe world’s second-largest economy has a deflating property bubble, local governments struggling to pay their debts and a banking system heavily exposed to both. Anywhere else these factors would be seen as precursors of a financial crisis. But not in China, conventional wisdom goes, because its debts are owed to domestic rather than foreign investors, the government already stands behind much of the financial system and capable technocrats are on top of things.

At their pandemic-era peak, consumer prices were rising faster than at any point in 40 years. Inflation has been declining gradually, which means prices are still rising but at a slower pace, also known as disinflation. Some prices have actually deflated over the past year, according to the consumer price index. Deflation is the opposite of inflation: It means consumers are seeing prices decline in certain categories. Over the long term, consumers also generally see savings as manufacturers shift goods production to lower-cost areas, Zandi said.

CNN —British actor Julian Sands, whose remains were found last month after he disappeared during a climbing trip in a California mountain range in January, spoke of how “dangerous” the activity could be in his last UK interview before he went missing. Sands had been promoting his latest role in a BBC radio drama “The Willows,” when the conversation turned to his upcoming climbing trip. “My version of LA isn’t swimming pools and parties … It’s rattlesnakes, bears, cougars, mountains,” he said during the interview. The Yorkshireman said climbing was about finding “solace” and “self-affirmation,” Radio Times reported. Human remains found in the area June 24 have since been declared to be those of the actor.

For decades, opposition to same-sex marriage was a marquee issue for the religious right in the United States. Activists like Anita Bryant, Jerry Falwell and James Dobson characterized homosexuality as a threat to traditional family life. Public opinion on same-sex marriage has turned rapidly toward acceptance this century. In the early 2000s, about 60 percent of Americans opposed it, according to the Pew Research Center. Another poll by Pew found that almost half of white evangelicals born after 1964 favored same-sex marriage in 2017, compared to about a quarter of older white evangelicals.

FedEx profit falls on lower e-commerce demand
  + stars: | 2023-06-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
June 20 (Reuters) - FedEx (FDX.N) on Tuesday reported a fall in quarterly adjusted profit after a bigger-than-expected drop in e-commerce delivery demand offset its $4 billion cost-cutting plan aimed at sheltering margins. The deflating e-commerce delivery bubble, recession risks and pressure from an activist investor pushed Tennessee-based FedEx to begin slashing fixed costs in a bid to protect margins. While the global shipping downturn has been a margin drag for most operators in the sector, FedEx also faces a balancing act of matching costs and capacity with waning demand. The company posted an adjusted profit of $4.94 per share for the fourth quarter ended May 31, compared with $6.87 per share a year earlier. Despite my awareness of this, I still didn't know how to say no, so I kept saying yes. It's critical to find "no" phrasing you're comfortable with so you actually feel comfortable saying it when necessary. For example, if your boss asks you to take on a new project, can you really just say "no" and walk away? While you don't need to explain the details of your current workload when you initially say no, be clear on them yourself. Saying no — frequently — is critical to creating boundaries around your time so you can show up strong at work and live a life you're excited about.

Japanese stocks have reached their highest level since 1990, when the country’s famous asset bubble was deflating. The Topix index has gained 12% this year, putting it among the best performing markets in the world in 2023. And even renowned investor Warren Buffett has cast his vote of confidence in the market—his investment flagship Berkshire Hathaway now owns more stocks in Japan than any other country outside of the U.S.

“And we kind of thought that they were going to take us.”They waited, well into the early hours of the morning – before finally getting an email from the US State Department. However, the US State Department has advised that American citizens in Sudan “should have no expectation of a US government-coordinated evacuation at this time” due to the security situation and the closure of the airport in Khartoum. “It is imperative that US citizens in Sudan make their own arrangements to stay safe in these difficult circumstances,” said State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel at a news briefing last Friday. The French Embassy in Sudan was carrying out a separate evacuation for French citizens, and foreigners of other nationalities were welcome. Welker also argued that Americans in Sudan are largely there for humanitarian and educational reasons – and that the US should help retrieve all those who want to leave.
Opinion | DeSantis Is Letting Trump Humiliate Him
  + stars: | 2023-04-21 | by ( Michelle Goldberg | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Trump might be easier for Joe Biden to beat, but anyone who gets the Republican nomination has a chance of being elected, and the possibility of another Trump term is intolerable. Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor who was supposed to stop Donald Trump, is deflating before even entering the race, with his poll numbers softening and donors fretting. Trump, meanwhile, seems more buoyed than hindered by his ever-proliferating scandals, and is racking up endorsements at DeSantis’s expense. The ad from the Trump camp is inspired by reporting about DeSantis eating pudding with his fingers on an airplane. “Trump should fight Democrats, not lie about Governor DeSantis,” the ad continues — whining about Trump’s aggression rather than countering it.
Not since the Montreal Canadiens beat the Los Angeles Kings in 1993 has the Stanley Cup been paraded through a Canadian city, an ego-deflating run of failure that has scarred a generation of fans. After winning the Stanley Cup in 1967, Maple Leafs defenceman Larry Hillman allegedly jinxed the team, saying they would not win it again until the club settled a contract dispute and paid him the $2,400 plus interest he believed he was owed. The Maple Leafs' big misfortune is playing in the same division as the Boston Bruins, who this season set NHL records for wins (65) and points (135), and the Tampa Bay Lightning, Stanley Cup finalists for the last three years. These two teams are once again hurdles that must be cleared on the way to a Stanley Cup. When the playoffs open on Monday, the Oilers will be the first of the Canadian teams to hit the ice, hosting the Los Angeles Kings in Game One of their best-of-seven series.
The move to integrate FedEx Ground, its outsourced package delivery arm, with the FedEx Express overnight air delivery business was announced almost a year after activist investor D.E. FedEx Express is already handling FedEx Ground's pickup and deliveries in Alaska and Hawaii - fueling concerns that Ground contractors in the lower 48 states could be let go. John Smith will become president and CEO of U.S. and Canada ground operations at FedEx Express and assume leadership of surface operations across the FedEx Express, FedEx Ground and FedEx Freight businesses from April 16. FedEx Freight will continue to provide freight transportation services as a standalone company under the Federal Express Corp banner, the company added. Shares in FedEx, which also announced a 10% dividend boost on Wednesday, were up about 2% in mid-morning trade.
